Amman, Dec 10 (Petra)- On the occasion of Human Rights Day, the National Center for Human Rights (NCHR) reaffirmed its national role as an independent institution in protecting human rights across the kingdom.
In a statement Wednesday, the NCHR highlighted that it issues an annual report submitted to His Majesty the King and the three constitutional authorities, providing a comprehensive assessment of human rights in civil, political, economic, social, and cultural spheres, including the rights of vulnerable groups. The report also monitors violations and submits recommendations to relevant authorities to improve legislation, practices, and the overall rights environment.
The center stressed its continued efforts in training, raising awareness, promoting a culture of human rights, and developing national mechanisms to ensure rights in line with international best standards.
It expressed appreciation for national efforts to strengthen the human rights framework, including legislative updates and support for the rule of law, and praised national committees formed as part of Jordan’s comprehensive reform process such as the Political System Modernization Committee, Economic Modernization Vision, and Judicial Development Committee which contribute directly to enhancing human rights and institutional reform based on participation, transparency, and the rule of law.
The center also commended the steadfast positions and forward-looking vision of His Majesty King Abdullah II in supporting human rights, promoting tolerance and the rule of law, advancing state institutions, empowering youth and women, and ensuring justice and equal opportunities for all.
It highlighted Jordan’s active role internationally in supporting global peace and security, consistent with national principles and its firm commitment to international legality.
The center emphasized that human beings are the core and purpose of national development and that protecting their dignity is essential for stability and progress. It called for continued joint efforts between the center, state institutions, civil society, and the private sector to promote human rights culture and awareness of the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
It urged ongoing constructive dialogue, strengthening national partnerships, and developing public policies that safeguard human rights and promote social cohesion and sustainable development.
International Human Rights Day is observed annually on December 10, marking the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948. This year marks the 77th anniversary of the declaration, which has served as a cornerstone of the international human rights system and a moral and legal reference for protecting human dignity and promoting justice and equality.
